Pavé Diamond Setting Types: A Technical Guide for Jewellery Manufacturers

From standard pavé to micro-pavé, French-cut to channel pavé — a complete technical guide to diamond setting styles and their automation requirements.

Pavé — from the French word for "paved" — describes the jewellery setting technique where small diamonds are set closely together, covering the surface of the piece with what appears to be a continuous layer of sparkle.

Standard Pavé (2.0–3.0mm stones)

The most common pavé style uses stones in the 2.0–3.0mm range. The Semsons Tech machine handles this range at maximum speed — 12,000 stones/hour. Standard pavé is typically used on ring shanks, bracelet bands, and pendant borders.

Micro-Pavé (0.8–1.5mm stones)

Micro-pavé uses stones at the limits of visibility — 0.8–1.5mm — creating an effect of continuous sparkle with no visible metal between stones. This is the most demanding automated setting application, requiring the highest precision. The Semsons Tech machine handles down to 0.8mm.

Automation Suitability by Style

All standard and micro-pavé styles are suitable for Semsons Tech automation. Channel and bezel settings (where metal surrounds the stone rather than wax-setting) are typically handled in post-casting operations.
